Place-name Index for Cumbria

The following lists have been compiled from Mannix & Whellan's History, Gazetteer and Directory of Cumberland, 1847, and Mannix & Co.'s, History, Topography and Directory of Westmorland, 1851, which includes the parishes of Furness, then part of Lancashire. It does not yet include places from that portion of Yorkshire which was absorbed into the newly-created county of Cumbria in 1974 - the parish of Sedbergh as it existed in 1829.

It contains all settlements and houses mentioned in the parish descriptions, but makes no claims to being a comprehensive list of all Cumberland place-names.

Variant spelling in the text is indicated thus - "Blin(d)crake". Where a placename occurs more than once each is given a separate entry. Note that modern spellings sometimes differ from those given here; such occurrences will usually be highlighted in the notes appended to the parish descriptions.
